In the movie scene depicted above, the grandfather is calling out to the ancestors. Pai responded that they did not hear him. However, when she calls out to the ancestors they hear her. Why do you think the ancestors heard her call and not her grandfather's call?
I believe that the ancestors heard Pai's call because she is the rightful leader since she is the one who found the rei puta (whale tooth). She wants and is dedicated to learn the Maori tradition and taiaha to prove that she is the rightful descendant of Paikea, the Whale Rider, to the people, but mostly to Koro because she loves him. I think that the ancestors did not hear Koro because he is not hearing Pai in a sense that she wants to become the leader he wants even though she is female.

I think the ancestors heard Pai's call because she is "the chosen one" Therefore, she has direct communication with the ancestors that her grandfather does not have.

I believe Pai has a pure heart. All that she wants is to be loved and accepted by her grandfather. The ancestors see this in Pai and choose her to be their vessel.

ReplyDeleteI think that the ancestors head Pai's call because she is supposed to be the leader. The ancestors didn't hear her grandfathers call because he is not the chosen leader, this goes to show that her grandfather should believe in her and allow her to be the leader. -Sarah

I believe that the ancestors hear Pai instead of her grandfather because she is the chosen one and she is the one who found the whale tooth, which was her grandfathers way of seeing who is going to be the next leader.

I agree with everyone else! Pai was chosen to be the leader, regardless of tradition and that is why the ancestors answered her instead of her grandfather. -Jackie
ReplyDeleteI concur with everyone else's comments. The ancestors heard Pai because her heart is pure and she is the true leader. The grandfather is not in the right mentality and he is too filled with pride and anger to see the signs that are so clearly in front of him.
